Using a FM Transmitter with a Zune
Like many geeks, I'd like the ability to play music anywhere in my house from the music collection that I have aggregated on a PC sitting in my home office. The only thing special about this PC is that it has the Zune client installed. It's not a Window Media Center PC. Nonetheless, I wanted a solution that allows me to play music hosted on a PC on the second floor of my home throughout the rest of the house. A friend of mine clued me into a device from C. Crane. Their Digital FM Transmitter accepts input through a standard headphone jack and broadcasts over adjustable FM frequencies and retails for $69.95 at the time of this writing when purchased directly from C. Crane.
There are other FM tranmitters available like the Belkin: TuneCast II which retails for $39.99, but the broadcast range is 10-30 feet. Belkin recommends that it is within 10 feet to minimize interference. I'd like a longer range than that for broadcasting throughout my house.

Finding the right frequency can be a challenge. A frequency that is not only unused, but also 1 Mhz or so away from any active channel in either direction is ideal. Conveniently, the Radio Locator site can be used to find both used and unused frequencies by zip code. Once you found a viable frequency you'll need to tune your receiver. The additional precision becomes a necessity when you have a narrow range of unused frequencies between two active frequencies.

PositioningNow that I have a good set of frequencies to try, it's time to find the best location for the transmitter. I attached the device to the head phone jack of my laptop, positioned myself close to the antenna attached to my home theater reciever and validated that I could, indeed, hear the dulcet tones of Ministry. I figured I'd start with something loud. It worked. Radio Free John was on the air.
I then started to wander about until the signal was lost, found, and lost again. Unsurprisingly, it works best when the transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna are within line of sight. Ideally, I wanted it to work on the second floor and so up I went and lo, there was still music. It didn't come in as clearly as on the first floor. I did have to adjust the antenna of the receiver a bit. So, the broadcast works fine for the home theater system. Most of the battle is won. I also have a small boom box that tends to wander between the basement and the kitchen. I was able to pick up the signal in the kitchen, but was out of luck in the basement.
Going Quasi-MobileSo I'm left with coverage over 2/3rds of the house. Not a bad deal for a $70 purchase. There are times I do want to be in the basement. There's a dart board down there and the games are much better with a beer and some music. This solution addresses the latter.
The device comes with a DC adapter and also has the option of using two AA batteries. So, for late night dart games, the Zune takes the place of my home office PC and my tunes are available down in the bowels of the house. With two fresh batteries the transmitter is unfettered and I'm off to the basement for a round of criket.
At this point I am quasi-moblie. I can roam the house, but globetrotting is not much of an option. I took it along for an extended car trip hoping to broadcast to my car radio from the passenger seat using this arrangement. I did not meet with success. Even if I managed to get a signal as I left my house I would have had to retune when crossing into areas with different radio stations.
Since I did have it on the road, I decided to give it a shot with the digital clock radio in the hotel room. So, I checked for the ideal unused frequency at Radio Locator, tuned the transmitter to an unused frequency and adjusted the clock radio using the analog dial. After some adjustments I was able to pick up the transmission. However, the range was only a foot or two. The clock radio has no external antenna.
SummaryMy experiences with the device can be summed up with these observations:
- Place the broadcast source at a high, central location in the house to maximize the range.
- Antenna size and positioning matters.

LONG RANGE FM TRANSMITTER

We know that building of Fm transmitter for first time is quite hard and we get confused about the components, parts, design, pcb, transmission frequency, inductor value and making of inductor , polarity of the capacitor and many things.
Here i am going to explain you a building of simple fm transmitter using a two transistor . I will try to explain as possible as i can. lets starts with the components required.
Transistor
Q1= BC547
Q2=2N2219
Capacitors
C1 & C2 =4.7uF(electrolytic)
C3,C4 &C7 = 100nF( ceramic 104)
C6 = 4.7 pF (ceramic )
C5= 10-30 pF (Variable capacitor or also known as TRIMMER )
Resistors
R1= 47K
R2= 220K
R3=4.7K
R4 & R5 =10k
R6= 100 ohm
INDUCTOR
L1= 8 turns of 22 Gauge copper wire around a simple ball pen.( I will upload a photo of it for more idea)
POWER SUPPLY
Battery (Power Supply) = 12-9 V DC (Always use battery and avoid adepter so i will
reduce noise in transmission )
HOW FM CIRCUIT WORK ? :
The circuit is basically a radio frequency (RF) oscillator that operates around 100 MHz. Audio from audio jack is fed into the audio amplifier stage built around the first transistor. Output from the collector is fed into the base of the second transistor where it modulates the resonant frequency of the tank circuit (the 8 turn coil and the trimcap) by varying the junction capacitance of the transistor. Junction capacitance is a function of the potential difference applied to the base of the transistor. The tank circuit is connected in a Colpitts oscillator circuit. It works on the principal of COLPITTS Oscillator.
ANTENNA IS MUST IN THE CIRCUIT:
A impudence matching ANTENNA is must required in the circuit,without Antenna circuit will never works .Generally we uses a telescopic antenna . which through the waves in the atmosphere .
A SHORT NOTE ON INDUCTOR :
It is easy to make take an 22 Gauge enameled copper wire and wound it on the ball-pen and make 8 turns on it tightly. i shown in photo below.
FM CIRCUIT CALIBRATION ( IMPORTANT PART :- PLZ KEEP PATIENCE MAY BE OF CIRCUIT ) YOU NOT GET SUCCESS IN
FIRST TRY OF
ADJUSTMENT.
Place the transmitter about 2-10 feet from a FM radio. Set the radio to somewhere about 89 - 90 MHz. Walk back to the Fm Transmitter and turn it on. Spread the winding of the coil apart by approximately 1mm from each other. No coil winding should be touching another winding. Use a small screw driver to tune the trim cap. Remove the screwdriver from the trim screw after every adjustment so the LC circuit is not affected by stray capacitance. Or use a plastic screwdriver. If you have difficulty finding the transmitting frequency then have a second person tune up and down the FM dial after every adjustment. One full turn of the trim cap will cover its full range of capacitance from 10pF to 30pF. The normal FM band tunes in over about one tenth of the full range of the tuning cap. So it is best to adjust it in steps of 5 to 10 degrees at each turn. So tuning takes a little patience but is not difficult. The reason that there must be at least 2-10 ft. separation between the radio and the TRANSMITTER is that the Transmitter emits harmonics; it does not only emit on one frequency but on several different frequencies close to each other.
Don't leave a circuit by just trying sometime try and try until you get some distortion in the fm receiver. once you get some distortion in it. that means your fm circuit is working. and if not then try to check all components and the soldering of your circuits and power supply .if you getting confusing about the power supply put one 2 Volt LED in series with 1K resistor in parallel with battery so you can easily get the on-off you fm transmitter.
ABOUT THE RANGE AND QUALITY (STRENGTH) :
I personally maid this project with great success i got a 1 km perfect range with proper quality of the signal after that up to 1.5 km small distortion starts and after that quality factor go down and then lost it. you should have to maintain the circuit in the metal case to protect it form the electrical isolation .
The range and quality are inversely personal to each other. Both can be increased by increasing the input voltage upto certain limit.

FM Transmitter

Today I want to share my first electronic project in my student life . which is a simple FM Transmitter.
Requirements :
1- Breadboard
2- Resistors , Capacitors as in figure
3- 9 volt DC Battery
4- Mic
Note: Don't buy Inductor as it wont work,until its in wounded wire shape and take a good mic with long legs :)
You have to make it yourself. You have to take a 15/22 gauge wire and wound it on anything with less diameter(pencil,pen,etc) or You can make it through this formula.
L = [d2 n2] / [18d + 40l]
Mine worked within 5,6 turns of 15 gauge wire on a HB-2 pencil. (Can vary Definitely :) )
Steps:
1- Wire all these components on the breadboard and importantly this circuit should take as little place as possible, try to make it congested and turn the long legs of the components into small legs ( By cutter ofcourse :) )
2- Now connect the DC battery and Tune the radio (e.g in Cellphone ), it would automatically tune a station without any voice output( means circuit is working) , Now you can sing Opera on the Mic :D..
3- You can introduce antenna with inductor capacitor combination (as in figure ) to extend the range.
Description :
1- R1,R2,R6 are DC biasing resistors for keeping the transistor Q1 forward Biased.
2- C1 is used to remove any DC signal in AC signal(voice from mic).
3- Transistor Q1 is just amplifying the voice signal which is in milivolts (mv)
4- Then again R4,R5,R8 are DC biasing resistors for Q2.
5- Now Q2 is amplifying the coming voltage and C7 and inductor are performing the Frequency Modulation.
Precautions :
Wiring should be congested , Mic should be connected with right polarity with the DC battery , Receiver should not be touching the inductor when the transmitter is on , Battery should at least be 6 volts.
You can use Circuit Maker from National Instruments .

- ‘d’ is the diameter of the coil from one wire centre to another wire centre. It should be specifies in inches.
