Using Android as an FM Transmitter
by William Lynch, Demand Media
Android mobile devices provide Internet access on the go and can even bring your favorite songs to your car stereo. With a few simple tweaks, your Android device can transform into an FM transmitter, allowing it to play its stored music over your car's audio system. Multiple conversion methods exist to accommodate a wide range of car stereo makes and models.

If your car stereo has an option for Bluetooth A2DP streaming, you can simply place your Android device in discovery mode, enter the appropriate pairing code and set your radio to Bluetooth. You can now play your Android's stored music through your car radio, although you may experience static from time to time unless you find the strongest available FM frequency.
Transmitters
An external FM transmitter that connects to your Android device through its 3.5mm headphone jack will broadcast through your stereo via available FM frequencies. External transmitters usually provide an inexpensive solution, but they're hardly foolproof: Factors such the weather, surrounding topography, frequency strength and even the location of your car's antenna can all create interference for the signal, resulting in static and inconsistent sound quality.

Modulators
While similar in premise to an FM transmitter, an FM modulator delivers superior performance without any fear of static. Unlike an external transmitter, which connects to your Android and sends signals to your stereo receiver, a modulator connects directly to your stereo's aerial port and your car's aerial antenna. The modulator secures a handful of FM frequencies specifically for the Android's transmissions, and relays them to the car stereo via a cable that eliminates all concerns about static.
Considerations
Most external transmitters and modulators require downloading and installing a specified app to your Android. While such apps are usually free, you will need to purchase the developer's FM transmitter hardware, such as the external transmitter itself, for the app to be of any use. And, while converting your Android device to an FM transmitter can bring your stored music to your car stereo, it should remain a last resort simply due to sometimes-spotty sound quality. If your car stereo features an aux-in port, running a 3.5mm stereo aux cable to your Android's headphone jack will deliver the best possible sound quality. Manufacturers also make cassette adapters that connect to the Android via a wire. The adapter, which looks like a standard audiocassette, is inserted into your car stereo's cassette player to allow you to hear your Android's music over the stereo's speakers.
